Can Plug-in Solar Work Alongside Your Existing Solar & Battery System?

One of the questions I get asked most often about plug-in solar is surprisingly simple:

Can I add a plug-in solar and battery system if I already have residential solar and batteries?

The answer is yes — but there are a few things you need to understand if you want the two systems to work happily together.

That’s exactly what I explore in my latest video.


Why add plug-in solar to an existing system?

If you can economically expand your existing residential solar and battery installation, that would normally be my first choice. Everything remains integrated and one system manages the solar generation, batteries and household demand.

Unfortunately, that isn’t always possible.

Your existing batteries may no longer be available, your inverter may have reached its capacity, or finding an installer willing to expand somebody else’s installation can be difficult and expensive.

That’s where the new generation of smaller plug-in solar and battery systems becomes interesting.

The problem with multiple batteries

Most home battery systems use a CT clamp to monitor electricity flowing into and out of your home. When the system detects electricity being imported, the battery inverter responds and supplies power.

But what happens when you have two independent battery systems, each with its own CT clamp?

Both can see the same household demand and both can potentially try to respond to it. Depending on how the systems operate, they can end up reacting to each other rather than simply supplying the house.

Give each system a different job

My solution is deliberately simple.

My large residential SolarEdge system is my demand system. It follows the changing demand of the house.

My smaller plug-in systems provide base load.

For example, I can tell my EcoFlow system to continuously supply 450W between 10am and 4pm. If the house suddenly needs another 3kW because somebody switches on the kettle, EcoFlow continues supplying its 450W while the residential system supplies the additional demand.

You could even add another independent battery system and give that a different time slot.

Instead of having multiple batteries competing with each other, each system has its own job.
