DJI Power 2000 Review: More Than Just a Portable Power Station?

Portable power stations are incredibly useful when you need electricity away from home. The problem is that for many of us, once the camping trip, holiday or day out is over, that expensive battery goes back into the garage or shed and sits there doing absolutely nothing.
The DJI Power 2000 has an interesting answer to that problem.
I've been testing the new DJI Power 2000, a 2,048Wh portable power station with up to 3,000W of AC output. But those aren't the specifications that caught my attention.
What makes this power station different is what it can do when you bring it home.
A Portable Power Station That Can Become a Home Battery
My wife and I regularly take our electric bikes away with us. A portable power station means we can recharge them without relying on an Airbnb or B&B owner's electricity.
That's useful, but what happens when we get home with energy still sitting in the battery?
With the DJI Power 2000, I can connect the unit to my home and use that remaining stored energy to offset some of the electricity the house is consuming.
In the UK, this isn't simply a case of plugging the Power 2000 into a normal 13A socket and feeding electricity into the house. My installation uses a dedicated fused spur installed by a qualified electrician.
Once connected, the DJI Power 2000 can operate in grid-tied energy storage mode and discharge at up to 800W.
That's the feature that turned this from another portable power station into something I genuinely wanted to test.
Testing the DJI Power 2000 as a Home Battery
In the video I take you through the complete process.
We start by using the Power 2000 for one of the jobs I actually need a portable battery for — charging our electric bikes. Then I bring it home, connect it to the newly installed fused spur and see whether I can put the remaining energy back to work.
And rather than simply trusting what the DJI app tells me, I independently monitor the circuit to verify that energy really is being supplied back into the house.
I also explore the DJI Home app, including time-of-use schedules, charging and discharging power, grid-tied operation and the options available if you add solar panels.
There are limitations too, including an important restriction on using the Power 2000's AC sockets while it's operating in grid-tied mode. I cover those in the video as well.
Is the DJI Power 2000 Worth Buying?
For me, the interesting question isn't whether the DJI Power 2000 is a good portable battery.
It's whether buying a portable power station becomes easier to justify when that battery can continue working after you get home.
That's what I'll be testing over the coming months.
