I Built a £250 Plug-In Solar System – What Would It Save At Your Home?

When I built my first plug-in solar system for under £300, the response was incredible.
The most common question wasn't about the solar panels, the wiring or even the microinverter.
Instead, people kept asking one simple question:
"That's great for your house Jon, but what would it generate at mine?"
It's a fair question.
Solar generation depends on where you live, the direction your panels face, the angle of installation and how much sunlight your property receives throughout the year.
That's why I've taken the next step.
In my latest video, I build another low-cost plug-in solar system for around £250 and introduce a brand-new tool designed to help estimate how much electricity a similar system could generate at your home.
What Is A Plug-In Solar System?
A plug-in solar system is exactly what it sounds like.
Instead of requiring a full rooftop solar installation, these systems use a microinverter to convert solar energy into usable electricity and feed it directly into your home through a standard electrical connection.
They're becoming increasingly popular because:
Low upfront cost
Simple installation
Ideal for renters and homeowners
No need for a full roof installation
Can be mounted in gardens, on fences or balconies
For many households, plug-in solar offers an affordable way to reduce imported electricity without spending thousands of pounds.
The Big Problem With Solar Savings Estimates
Most online solar calculators are designed for full rooftop systems.
They assume:
Large solar arrays
South-facing roofs
Professional installations
High energy consumption
That's not particularly helpful if you're considering a small plug-in solar setup.
What people really want to know is:
How much electricity would a small system generate?
How much money could it save?
Is it worth the investment?
How long would it take to pay for itself?
Introducing My Plug-In Solar Savings Calculator
To help answer those questions I've built a new calculator that uses real solar generation data to estimate what a plug-in solar system could produce at your location.
By entering details about your installation, you can explore different scenarios and see how changes in location, orientation and system size affect performance.
The goal isn't to produce unrealistic numbers.
The goal is to provide a realistic estimate based on actual solar data.

The Hardware Used In This Build
In the video I cover:
The solar panels used in the project
Where I source second-hand and low-cost panels
The APsystems microinverter
Mounting options
Safety considerations
Installation costs
Real-world performance expectations
This isn't a sales pitch.
It's simply an honest look at what can be achieved with a modest budget and realistic expectations.
Is Plug-In Solar Worth It?
That's the million-pound question.
The answer depends on:
Your location
Electricity prices
Available sunlight
Installation position
How much daytime electricity you use
For some households, plug-in solar could be an excellent investment.
For others, the savings may be smaller than expected.
That's exactly why I built the calculator.
Rather than guessing, you can now estimate the potential benefits for your own situation.
