I Built a 3kW Solar Pergola – DIY (Sort Of!)

What do you do when you want more solar panels, need somewhere to test new home battery systems, and have a part of the garden that's almost unusable during a hot summer?

Apparently, you build a solar pergola.

That's exactly what I've been doing over the last few weeks, and the finished result is a 3kW solar pergola built from six 500W bifacial JA Solar panels.

And I'm rather pleased with how it turned out.


DIY… Sort Of

I should probably qualify the DIY claim.

I didn't build the wooden pergola itself. For that I brought in what I describe in the video as a “responsible adult.”

But once the structure was standing, I installed the mounting rails, panels, cabling and associated solar equipment myself.

I also managed to reuse some of the mounting rails from the solar array that was originally installed on my house back in 2010. Rather than throw perfectly usable aluminium away when those panels were removed, I kept it. Five years later, it finally has another job.

Sitting on top are six 500W bifacial panels, giving the pergola 3kW of solar generation capacity.


It's Also My New Solar Test Platform

This isn't simply another 3kW solar array.

One of the things I regularly do on the channel is test home batteries and plug-in solar systems. I therefore wanted the ability to change which panels were connected to which system.

Rather than treating the six panels as one conventional string, each panel has its own cable run.

At the moment, two panels are connected to the Jackery system in my office, while the other four run back towards the garage and my EcoFlow Stream system.

But I can change that configuration when another system arrives for testing.

And there might just be one of those coming quite soon...


The Bit I Hadn't Properly Considered: Rain

Of course, building a roughly 4m × 3m solid surface in a British garden introduces another consideration.

Water. Lots of it.

The first proper downpour demonstrated just how much rainwater the new roof collects. Enough, in fact, to damage the edge of my patio before I installed guttering.

I've since added a gutter and downpipe, with plans for a water butt so that some of that collected rain can eventually be used to water the garden.

I've also been experimenting with 3D-printed drainage clips to stop water pooling along the lower edges of the panels.

That's one of the things I like about projects like this. You build something, discover the bits you hadn't thought about, and then work out how to make it better.


So, Was It Worth Building?

Definitely.

The original motivation wasn't actually just about generating more electricity.

During one of the hottest UK summers we've experienced, this area of the garden became incredibly uncomfortable. The pergola now provides permanent shade for us — and importantly for our two large fluffy dogs — while turning otherwise unused space above our heads into another source of renewable electricity.

It gives us somewhere pleasant to sit, 3kW of additional solar capacity, and a flexible platform I can use for future solar and battery testing.

There are still a few jobs to finish before winter, and I'm already learning things I'd probably do differently next time.
